Understanding Fibromyalgia Treatments

When diagnosed with fibromyalgia, most doctors will engage in a chemically fueled battle to keep the disease at bay and minimize its symptoms. Initially, a physician may prescribe an analgesic supposed to deal with the toughest bouts of pain. Sometimes this prescription pain reliever is coupled with over the counter pain killers. Next come the muscle relaxers hoping to do away with the most serious muscle cramps the patient might be experiencing. Sometimes this is also considered the best way of underscoring other analgesics which are being used. In fact, physicians have reported that this form of treatment is actually quite effective.

While this may be true in the most severe cases, those physicians who prefer to stay away from the more side effect risking medications have found a more natural solution. A combination of biofeedback, journaling and natural magnesium component supplementation has a similar effect on the overall pain management of the patient. This approach requires the complete willingness of doctor and patient. They must vow to be committed to this course of treatment. It is important to not consider the use of shortcuts acceptable when seeking to deal with fibromyalgia in a more healthful and natural manner.

This is most commonly seen when working hard to find a way to overcoming the insomnia which accompanies fibromyalgia. While on the pharmacological side there is the possibility of using antidepressants and sleeping pills, it is not the only option. On the natural and holistic side is the possibility of dietary supplementation, meditation and stress relieving exercises to foster the ability to sleep.

Another great way of relaxing the muscles and fostering an overall sense of wellbeing for the fibromyalgia sufferer is the use of massage and acupuncture. While massage has long since been acknowledged as a great muscle relaxant, acupuncture is still viewed with some suspicion. However, this is most often by those who do not understand the underlying tenets of the treatment. It is obvious that understanding fibromyalgia treatments sometimes requires more than just a willingness to stretch one’s imagination a bit. It instead requires a willingness to learn new things and apply them.

After the initial bit of skepticism is overcome, the remaining attitude is frequently one of surprise when alternative methods work better than initially expected! Sometimes this experience builds upon itself. Often the momentum is sufficient to make the patient a bit more adventurous when it comes to seeking out alternative treatments sometimes used in addition to pharmacological approaches. It depends on the mindset of the individual patient and her willingness to accept there is more to feeling well and functioning normally than simply the reliance on a number of pills. But, once this attitude is fostered the odds are exceedingly good the upward swing will continue.
